Creating a Safe Space Where SMART Girls Can Thrive – Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands

A special thank you to our 2021 Core Grantee Partner, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands for writing this guest blog and sharing more about their wonderful organization. To learn more about what they do and who they serve, visit https://bgcomaha.org/.

The Carter Lake Boys & Girls Club held their Kick Off Party for SMART Girls this week. Girls from grades three and up came to enjoy good company, conversation, and of course—a popcorn bar. Yum!

The girls got to be in their own area with their favorite staff, Miss Niki. She is a natural role model they all look up to. There were three young ladies from seventh grade and one ninth grader leading the group. Their leadership and assistance running the program cannot be matched! The middle and high school gals led an icebreaker game called “This or That,” helped to assemble their journals, and distributed the mix-ins at the popcorn bar.

Miss Niki welcomed the girls with an idea board activity, where she wrote down their suggestions for what they would like to see in the class over the next semester. They each got to pick out a notebook and decorated the front cover to create their own journal where they can draw or write their feelings. We will have an entry item for them each week.

The girls were also asked to choose a partner. We then gave them notecards and asked them to write a kind note to each other. VERY nice comments, affirmations, and praise were written—it was an all-around warm and fuzzy filling.

We had 24 girls attend the kick-off, and the first thing they asked, as things were winding down, was if we could have this program at least two times a week. We’re looking forward to another inviting, safe, and fun SMART girls session!orper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
