Mary Janssen, the regional director for Child Care Resources and Referrals of Northeast Iowa at Exceptional Persons Inc., has been working to confront the child care crisis. Mary, Kaye Englin of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, and others in the area came together to form the Black Hawk Child Care Coalition with the support of IWF. IWF’s Child Care Solutions Tour allowed Mary, Kaye, and others the resources to bring together the community to confront the child care crisis. To kick off the Coalition, a meeting was held in early May that was attended by over 40 community members. IWF’s research and support helped the Coalition focus on four areas to help make child care more affordable and available in Northeast Iowa: encouraging businesses to offer child care, supporting child care entrepreneurs, involving community colleges in the area with child care, and expanding child care to the non-English speaking community.
