Women and the Law

“Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain.” Iowa State Seal (1847-present)

The path towards equal rights and representation for Iowa women is marked by the groundbreaking achievements of intelligent, hardworking and committed women. Many of whom broke down barriers and opened new doors for women across the United States and beyond.

In 1869, Arabella Mansfield became the first woman lawyer admitted to the practice of law in the state of Iowa, as well as the United States. By March 1870, Iowa became the first state to officially amend its attorney licensing code as three other women were admitted. Mansfield's accomplishment was highly praised and a major achievement of the women's rights movement.

In 1873, The University of Iowa was among the first public universities to grant a law degree to a woman, Mary B. Hickey Wilkinson. Two years later, Emma Haddock, of Iowa City, was admitted as the first woman to practice law before the United States federal courts.

In 1986, Hon. Linda K. Neuman became the first woman appointed to the Iowa Supreme Court. Neuman is highly regarded for her well-crafted and researched opinions, her application of the law and her dedication to the judicial system. In addition, Neuman served as a leader of the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ); scholar of women and the law; and mentor for women entering the legal field. Neuman retired from the Iowa Supreme Court in 2003. She currently teaches an ethics course at the University of Iowa. Today, Justice Marsha K. Ternus serves as the first female chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court.

On Friday, October 16, 2009, meet this amazing pioneer and demonstrate your support for Iowa women and girls. We are pleased to announce that Linda K. Neuman will be the keynote speaker at the Iowa Women’s Foundation 13th Annual Awards Luncheon at the Coralville Marriott. Learn more and RSVP online today at www.iawf.org.
