Title IX
June 23, 2009 marked the 37th anniversary of Title IX. The law, which was originally passed in 1972, reads: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
Adoption of the law heralded progress in the long campaign to achieve gender equity in athletics which still continues today. Dr. Christine Grant helped draft Title IX implementation guidelines with the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Fellow Title IX advocate, Amy Wilson, a PhD candidate at the University of Iowa, was recently named one of five Administrators of Tomorrow by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators.
Girls on the Run of Johnson County, an IWF 2009 Grant Partner, is helping grow the next generation of female athletic through their innovative program that incorporates running, mentorship and other esteem-building activities.
