Women Leaders Join Forces to Showcase Miss Representation

The League of Women Voters of Johnson County, 50-50 in 2020, AAUW, Iowa Women’s Foundation and the Women’s Resource and Action Center have joined forces with the 5th Annual Landlocked Film Festival to bring Miss Representation to Iowa City. The film will be shown at the Bijou Theatre, The University of Iowa 166-B Iowa Memorial Union, on Friday, August 26 at 6 pm followed by Roxanne Conlin, a Des Moines activist and attorney. Conlin ran for Iowa governor in 1982 and U.S. Senate in 2010. Learn more about her experience with the press and what we can do to begin to change societal attitudes regarding women and girls. This video was inspired by historian Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner who brilliantly determined to preserve and document the writings of suffragist Matilda Joslyn Gage. In the 19th century, Gage complained that women of means funded their husbands' alma maters, churches and the ballet, but rarely stepped forward to fund their suffragette sisters.
