The reception to announce the first year of grant awards in December 1996 was a humble celebration. One reporter from the Cedar Rapids Gazette attended and gave a nice review of the foundation in his newspaper. In 1997, around 100 supporters and grantees gathered at a luncheon to honor the work being done to remove barriers and expand opportunities for women and girls. The Annual Awards Luncheon was born.
As a fundraising event, every luncheon has strengthened IWF's grant-making ability. Each year community supporters have celebrated the funding of innovative programming for women and girls, while connecting and inspiring supporters. Previous years' speakers have included Dr. Sally Mason, President of the University of Iowa (2007), Christine Grumm of the Women's Funding Network (2006), and Marie C. Wilson, Former President of the Ms. Foundation and Founder/President of the White House Project (2005).
With the addition of the REACH Awards (formerly 50% Solution Awards) in 2006 which raise up those who help open doors for others, the luncheon itself has become a force for positive social change.
