Structure
The Iowa Women's Foundation was born on an August morning in 1994 when 27 women met together to discuss the benefits of forming a statewide foundation to fund projects that would meet the needs of Iowa women and girls. The meeting resulted in a unanimous vote to establish IWF. As founder Jean Jew reported, "...everybody said, yes, and then, at the end, everyone just shouted hurray and started clapping! And I remember that was it!"
That vote was the start of an inclusive, collaborative culture that has influenced the development of IWF. The founders laid the groundwork for a strong, flexible structure that has allowed the organization to grow and change as it has served Iowa women and girls. IWF was incorporated in December 1994 and obtained 501[c]3 status in October 1995. A detailed, written account of the foundation's first 10 years, "History of the Iowa Women's Foundation: Investing in the Dreams of Girls and the Power of Women", may be obtained by contacting IWF.
