Pam feels very fortunate to have grown up in a loving family with parents who taught her that she could be anything that she wanted to be. Pam grew in up in Chicago and attended the University of Iowa, College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1974. At that time, enrollment was 20% females and 80% males. Today, those figures have flipped with most pharmacy schools across the nation enrollment at 80% females and 20% males.
Pam met her husband Dan while they both were students at Iowa and married shortly after graduation. Dan grew up in Cedar Rapids and always had that entrepreneurial spirit buying into a marine business two weeks after their wedding. Pam worked as a pharmacist for Drugtown in Cedar Rapids and was one of the very first pharmacists to help implement the first computer system in a retail pharmacy. The very first pharmacy computer was developed in the late 1970’s by Norand Corporation, Cedar Rapids, IA and the Drugtown location where Pam worked was the first pharmacy in Iowa to install one.
In 1980, Dan and Pam opened PIP Printing on Hollywood Blvd in Iowa City within days of the Drugtown on Hollywood Blvd opening. Pam spent many years running back and forth between both businesses wearing many hats. After working for many year’s nights and weekends at Drugtown, Pam was convinced by her husband that it was time for her to concentrate on their business and enjoy the flexibility that would allow her to spend more time with their children and their activities. Although Pam has not practiced pharmacy since 1990, she still keeps her license current.
Dan and Pam have two children. Their son, Dan graduated from the University of Iowa and is their production manager. Their daughter, Kris attended college out of state for her undergraduate degree, playing Division 1 college tennis and later earned a Law Degree and her MBA from the University of Iowa. Kris and her husband Phil have one daughter, Emmie and live in Coralville where Kris is now in training to be a volunteer firefighter.
Pam hopes that helping run a successful family business for the past 30 years and the experiences she has had, both personal and business, will help enable the Iowa Women’s Foundation to grow and in return empower more girls and young women in Iowa the support they need to attain their potential and dreams.
